Bedtime story? Two boys survive a pirate raid. The ship is a merchant ship, possibly owned by their father, who conducts commerce between the Old World and New. During their travels, the father is either killed or thrown overboard by pirates who some say are led by Captain Kidd. The younger of the two boys is about five years old when the pirates land on the Jersey coast and hide some booty. They leave him there and land his older brother further down the coast.

Settlers take to calling the younger boy Azariah Casto but when his older brother returns, he insists that is not their name, that their surname is DeCasto and that they were born in France.
